Miley Cyrus toungueMiley Cyrus is easily one of the most unlovable musicians in Hollywood. I would say that she is regarded as one of the least talented and most sold-out artists since Paris Hilton or Kelly Osbourne.

The show Hannah Montana was never good. The age-old plot of a pop star with a pensioned for privacy was hardly going to change the world. But it was instrumental in her eduction of what it takes to make it to the big leagues. The role of the charismatic high school nobody juxtaposed to the passionate pop sensation taught Cyrus how to be comfortable on set and on stage. In the meantime, she was given the practice necessary to foster her already seeded musical abilities.

If you want me to defend her horrendous new haircut or suggest that her tattoos are nothing less than cliche I would have a hard time standing my ground. However, I think she has a sensational set of lungs that is just waiting to change everyone’s made-up minds. Her voice alone may be enough to overshadow her outward appearance.

Given that the 20-year-old “child star” grew up on tour with her country-singing father and took a few lessons from her godmother, Dolly Parton, it would be surprising if some of their world-class talent didn’t rub off on her. What you call nepotism I call “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

Somewhere in the deep archives of Youtube I found a series called “The Backyard Sessions,” where Cyrus sings a handful of covers and proves that she has a surprising set of pipes. The acoustic tracks speak for themselves as they seem to take your breath away. I could go on about my surprise until my keyboard gives out but it’s probably best for you to just press play.

If you loved that (which I know you secretly did) the other two songs are HERE and HERE.

And then there is her new music video for “We Can’t Stop.” At first I jumped to the same conclusion as the rest of the world. I assumed it was a her pushing the envelope or, once again, begging her audience to see her as an adult. Then I realized she is an adult, she does party and twerk and drink and laugh and have fun. She doesn’t sit at home in her jim jams watching Hannah Montana reruns, drinking diet soda and laughing at Jackson’s jokes. The video is intended to be sarcastic, fun, and and the slightest bit realistic. She is young and living her life to the fullest, and if that means getting her twerk on, who is to say she can’t? Plus, the song is totally stuck in my head! And it’s, like, number one!

At the end of the day, I think that she still has some growing up to do. There will be more bad hairstyles and the occasional slip up or drunk tweet, but one thing is for certain; there is a potential for greatness locked inside this often unloveable girl.
