When I was in New York City a couple of weeks ago, I was lucky enough to catch this crazy-sexy-cool-edgy-fantastic duo live in action. Their performance at Westgay started with them emerging from a giant cardboard monster/robot. And that was just the start of a brilliant show with catchy lyrics, sexy costumes and addictive vocals and guitar. Ladies and Gentlemen, I introduce you to, TheSwimmingPools…
So where do you guys come from and how did TheSwimmingPools get started?
We’re French and American, from Paris and Pueblo, we found each other in a club called Luxx and Lux Interior has kept us together.
You have some very energetic stage performances! How do you get psyched up for all that leaping around?
Thank you… yes, the shows are very physical. Part of the feeling we want to create is like an exorcism, a sacrifice, like an orgasm! It’s giving over to the “id” and letting the animal take over.
Tell us about your craziest costumes to date…
We did a tour of Europe where Daniel would begin the show naked, crawl onto the stage, and then get dressed as the show progressed. It was a scandal! At many clubs we were told we had to change our show (even in NYC we’ve had this happen!… ). Now most of the time we’ll win them over and we can continue with our show, but we have walked out of performing because the management can’t deal with the sight of an undressed or naked man. Playing with an audience’s expectations, their sense of civility and savagery, good and bad taste are what we like doing, it’s our way of pushing beyond the ordinary.
Who are your main musical influences, and who do you just love/hate that’s in the charts right now?
Musical influences… that would be difficult to pin down because we live in such a crazy time with too many choices, but there are a few people who we look to again and again like Iggy Pop, Grace Jones, The Cramps, John Barry, Nina Simone. As far as love/hate for people in the charts now, the people on the top of the charts are more like actors, they are the face/voice to deliver a product that a huge team of people create, they lack that individual quality that interests us and is essential to so many of our heroes.
If you were an actual swimming pool, what would it be like?
Full of fantasy!
What do you have lined up for 2013?
We are recording now, so lots of new music! This summer we’ll be performing and throwing parties in the Meat Rack on Fire Island and in the Fall we’re planning to tour the West Coast [of the USA].
What’s the hottest thing about NYC at the moment?
Spa Castle, this amazingly huge spa in Queens… it’s 5 floors of heaven.
