When I booked my trip to New York City for Gay Pride, I knew it was going to be an amazing experience. However, not even in my wildest dreams would I have ever imagined how crazy things would turn.
Everything started as soon as I landed. I only had a few hours to get ready before my first event. Thankfully, I have great friends in the “City that never sleeps” that made this easier for me. I took a shower, fixed my hair, put on my Versace for H&M shirt, and was ready to go.
First stop, Rufskin Matinee Kick Off Party. Dj Billy Lance was spinning tunes while me and the other guests enjoyed cocktails. Half-naked guys walked around the store wearing the latest brand products while inviting everybody to join Matinee Pride the next day. Among the New York personalities attending were Christophe Sanchez-Vahle and Patrick Crough — the last one, the man behind the artistic production of Matinee Parties.
A quick wardrobe change and I was up to my next Pride Event. From Chelsea to Hell’s Kitchen it was time to see the world famous “Boys in Heels” Kazaky perform. XL Nightclub was packed! After waiting almost an hour, it was showtime. And they put on a good one – Gays Gone Wild, literally — opening with “In the Middle,” they set up the mood to dance. Runway walks, fierce and strong poses, electrifying visual effects, and their signature look were part of the concert. Present were the legendary Amanda Lepore, Marco Ovando, International Male Model Daniel Garofali, and Jack Mackenroth, among others.
To wrap up my Friday night I head over to East Village hot spot “Eastern Bloc.” It seemed like I went back in time to the Soviet Union days, but with Go-Go Dancers Kennedy Carter and Matthew Camp as the army commanded by Dj Chi Chi LaRue. On my way to the restroom I ran across Chris Crocker just to have our own X-Rated photo session. Boys you better watch out, I might become the next Kristen Bjorn.
Matinee New York Pride Festival at Governor’s Beach Club on Saturday was a delicious fest of guys showing a lot of skin. Opening with Dj Billy Lance and followed by CircuitFestival Barcelona headliners, DJ Taito Tikaro and Hector Fonseca, the venue was on fire! While me and Jonathan Ashford were promoting GuySpy, backstage, Patrick Crough and his team were getting the Go-Go boys ready in their costumes. After I finished my job duties, I went behind closed doors to find Orange’s Country trouble maker Benjamin Godfre hanging out with underwear designer and model Todd Sanfield. We party and we partied hard — you’ll see the pictures, most of them NSFW-The surprise of the night, apart from get slapped and making out with Benjamin Godfre (Yes! it happened) was Natasha Bedingfield’s closing performance. Beyond any doubt, Saturday night was bananas.
Sunday I woke up still a little “intoxicated” from the night before (thanks, Benji), but I managed to drag my hangover to 36th Streett and Fifth Avenue for the Media Check-in and be ready for the 2012 Gay Pride March. Thousands of New Yorkers gathered around to see the boats drive by full with rainbows, glitter, guys in underwear, and blazing queens led by Grand Marshalls Cyndi Lauper, Chris Salgardo, Phyllis Siegel, and Connie Kopelov. This year’s Gay Pride celebration was really special as the gay community also celebrated the one-year anniversary marking the passage of same-sex marriage in the city.
Altogether, Pride Weekend in NYC is da-best Gay Pride, indeed.
