Glasses are the ultimate accessory for any man. But buying a brand-new pair of frames is no easy task. Walking into a store with hundreds of styles, colors, and shapes can be overwhelming, to say the least.
last week I attended The Men Event private shopping party at Union Square Optical in New York, and, I gotta admit, these guys have a great, er, eye for picking out the perfect lens.
Marc Rosen helped me through the process, and after trying on about 25 pairs I finally found the ones! Rosen told me the average time to buy glasses is half-an-hour, and that customers try, on average, 20 to 40 pairs of frames before they make a final decision. I think I did just fine.
Rosen and Dr. David J Schwartz (owner of the store) talked to me about what we can expect to see guys wearing this season. Check out the Fall 2013 Men’s eyewear trends:
Old-school shapes like ’70s- and 80s’-inspired silhouettes, rounded wraparounds, vintage profiles, classic shields, and aviators take on a rugged edge moving towards earth tones combined with leather and wood finishes; great for the businessman.
50 SHADES OF SEASIDE
For the groovy man, muted greens in olive and sage and smoky blues and grays pair up with classic streamlined shapes, with finishing touches in subtle temple adornments.
Hip Hop influences in metallic additions, matte finishes, gold trims, embellished and textured brow bars will bring out the rock star in you.
Ideally for the intrepid man, color-blocking shapes, brown and orange tints, gradient, matching lens and frame colors make a strong statement this season.
Be on the lookout for these fall styles and choose the ones that fit your personality. One more thing… Please, please, please only wear glasses if you need them. Vanity glasses are tacky and make you look dumb. I know we won’t all see eye to eye on glasses as pure accessories, but I had to say it.
