Former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has died at the age of 87 after suffering from a stroke today (8 April).

Her spokesman Lord Bell said: ‘It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning.

‘A further statement will be made later.’

The first and only female prime minister in British history was a divisive figure for LGBT people, who led the government from 1979 to 1990.

Thatcher’s government introduced Section 28 in 1988, banning the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality within schools.

But in the 1960s, Thatcher went against traditional Tories by voting in favor of a law that would legalize homosexuality.

Peter Tatchell, veteran gay rights campaigner, said on Twitter: ‘Margaret Thatcher was an extraordinary woman but mostly for the wrong reasons. Emasculated local government & civil liberties. Section 28.’

David Cameron, the current UK Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative party, has released a statement on Twitter.

‘It was with great sadness that l learned of Lady Thatcher’s death. We’ve lost a great leader, a great Prime Minister and a great Briton,’ Cameron said.

A funeral service for Thatcher will take place soon at St Paul’s Cathedral in London.
