In Vancouver we have a vibrant music scene full of artists all forging paths in new and exciting ways. I recently did an interview with Hannah Georgas that showcased a little bit of our small city’s musical strengths. However, even amongst a handful of unheard-of hipsters, it’s still easy to find a fistful of cliches.

Recently I was sent the new video from a little known local band called Sunshine. The film shows a sassy gay couple dancing around in cheap costumes as they display passion, love, and domestic violence.

The video stirred quite the cubicle conversation as we all had varying opinions of not only its message but its motive.

Due to the intimacy and candour of this film you must allow yourself to connect with our two protagonists. If you, much like myself, merely find them annoying, then you won’t make it past the introduction.

A large portion of the Indie Movement is this unrealistic ideal that suggests we must show what is considered to be “real.” If that is a possible notion to strive for, then it may have been achieved in this film. Watching this, you instantly get the feeling that every smile, glimpse, and kiss is a true moment. Granted, I have recently been informed that this pair of over-the-top bottoms are indeed a couple in real life.

While I could just as easily comment on the acting abilities of Superman during his dramatic fight scene (Oh Brother!) or talk about the actual song itself, which really isn’t bad, I would much prefer to present you with a few questions.

Is this where we are headed? Is this couple a fair representation of the gay community, and if so what does that mean for us? Also, have we truly moved into an age where everything is overdone and nothing is new? Or am I the only one who thinks a gay super hero love affair is a bigger controversy than a fur coat?
